Mental Health First Aider Cards

Mental health can have a considerable impact on the industry. It was important that this contractor found a system which supported their employees to not feel ashamed or embarrassed to seek help. During an on site meeting the Public Liaison Officer and operatives discussed how they could further support mental health on site. They asked the operatives how they can effectively address the issue of mental health in the workplace and encourage individuals to talk about their problems.

The idea was put forward that all operatives have the opportunity to have time out using their mental health first aid cards which can be used at any time. The card was given to all staff when inducted to site and can be discreetly handed in at reception. The individual in need then makes their way to the first aid room where they are met by an on site Mental Health First Aider. This allows the operative to remain anonymous without having to approach the mental health first aider in front of other staff members.

This idea breaks the stigma around mental health and builds a positive mental health culture on the site. It also keeps the operatives identity anonymous so they are more likely to come forward and talk about their problems.
