The project team at the Grosvenor Crescent site were under a lot of pressure to deliver a difficult project on time, budget and to a very high standard. This resulted in a few colleagues noting they may be showing signs of stress.

As a result of this, the project team devised a Stress Break Rota. This entailed members of the same sub teams pairing up and covering each other when their counterpart was on a stress break. This stress break was a half hour break in the middle of the working day, additional to the lunch break, to enable staff to take time out and de-stress.

With work being covered, the staff felt no negative feelings about taking this break, and as this was backed from senior management it was a huge success. The team utilised their close proximity to Hyde Park in London and often took breaks walking through the park, adding additional health benefits.

    Great idea, I don’t think enough of people realise what stress site management including subcontractors are under on some projects . I think that the break is good but just knowing that senior management acknowledge that it is a stressful project is a great help. Everyone is different and handle stress differently and it is important that everyone looks out for each other and helps those that struggle and give them support. Doesn’t mean they aren’t capable of doing the job just their coping mechanism isn’t as strong as others and bit of support can go along way.
