Primary School Sensory Room

This contractor has established strong ties with the local community and council due to their social value initiatives that have been implemented on the project.

Accordingly, they approached the local Primary School to see if there was any way they could assist the school’s young and bright children, particularly those with special needs. Working within the confines of an existing classroom, the design and space seeks to establish individual spaces with degrees of sensory isolation, privacy and openness.

The carefully selected tactile material palette offers sound absorption, calming colour and sensory isolation. The design also offers the school the option to vary the degrees of sensory isolation dependant on their needs.

Sensory rooms are pivotal support mechanisms for individuals and staff with key learning difficulties, sensory impairments, and developmental disabilities which allow the inclusion and promotion of better neurodiversity. Additionally, the introduction of a new space within an existing school often will trigger long and expensive local authority approvals. The design team therefore sought to design a space within the confines of the existing school without changing the space to the degree that would require additional protracted statutory approvals.
