Introduction to Plastic Pollution

Topic Progress:

Plastics and packaging may seem unavoidable in modern society, and with the global market driven by consumerism and convenience, the demand for plastic is only increasing.

For decades, society has ignored the environmental risks associated with plastics and packaging. However, scientific research and documentaries such as David Attenborough’s ‘Blue Planet’ have highlighted just how dangerous plastics and packaging are to the environment and to human health.

Despite the environmental risks associated with plastics, the construction industry is reliant on plastics in its everyday practices. In fact, the construction industry is the second largest consumer of plastic in the UK. It is therefore important that the industry tackles the issue of plastic pollution and significantly reduces its consumption of plastics and packaging.
